It is said that the Narwhal is the unicorn of the sea, a porpoise (that is the name of any small dolphin) of a pale color, found in the coastal waters and rivers of the Arctic. These legendary animals have two teeth. In males, the most prominent tooth is a sword-shaped fang, up to 2.5 meters long. This ivory tusk grows directly through the upper lip of the narwhal. In females, the tusk grows, but it does not become as prominent as the male’s.
The Narwhal are related to bottlenose dolphins, belugas, porpoises and killer whales. Like other porpoises, they travel in groups and feed on fish, shrimp, squid and other aquatic foods. They are often seen swimming in groups of 15 to 20, but concentrations of hundreds or even thousands of narvales have been reported. Sometimes these groups are trapped by the change of ice and are victims of hunters, polar bears or walruses. Eskimos hunt the narwhal for their long fangs and their skin, which is an important source of vitamin C in the traditional Arctic diet. Here we leave a video where they can be seen very closely:
